Paul Norton Named Region VIII Superintendent of the Year

Paul Norton, Superintendent of Schools for Texarkana Independent School District, has been named the Region VIII Education Service Center Superintendent of the Year from a field of 46 school districts within the regional area.

 

Since 1984, the Superintendent of the Year award program has honored outstanding Texas administrators for achievement and excellence in public school administration.  Candidates are chosen for their strong leadership skills, dedication to improving the quality of education in their school district, commitment to public support and involvement in education, and ability to build good employee relations among teachers and staff members.

 

Norton began his career in education in 1996 with Pleasant Grove ISD.  He joined the TISD Tiger Family in 2001 as Associate Principal of Texas High School.  Norton was named Principal of Texas High School in 2003 and was selected as the TISD Superintendent of Schools in June 2011.

Professionally, he was a member of Texas Association of Secondary School Principals from 1999 – 2011, serving on their Board of Directors and taking on the volunteer task of Assistant Coordinator and Coordinator for Region VIII.  He was also a member of National Association of Secondary School Principals from 2005 – 2011. Currently, Paul is a member of Texas Association of School Administrators and was appointed to their Future Ready Superintendent Academy in 2012.  In 2014, he was appointed to the Policy Committee on Public Education Information by Commissioner of Education Michael Williams.  Norton serves on the Executive Regional Advisory Council Committee for Region 8 Education Service Center and is a member of the National, Texas and Northeast Texas Alliances of Black School Educators.

Performance criteria for Superintendent of the Year includes:  Student Performance; Administration and School Climate; School Board-Superintendent Relations; School Improvement; Fiscal Management; Facilities Management; Instructional Management; Student Management; Personnel Management; School-Community Relations.

 

Norton’s selection will now move to the State Selection Committee where the 20 regional finalists will be pared down to five State Finalists.  State Superintendent of the Year will be announced during the 20154 Texas Association of School Administrators/Texas Association of School Boards Convention on October 3.
