The Scholars and Sigmas Unite to Celebrate Freedom, Culture, Entrepreneurship, and Community During 2026 Juneteenth Events
The Scholars, in partnership with the Sigma organization, proudly announces a citywide series of Juneteenth celebrations designed to honor African American history, celebrate culture, empower youth, and strengthen the community through education, music, entrepreneurship, and fellowship.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 — the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, Juneteenth represents freedom, resilience, progress, culture, and the continued pursuit of equality and opportunity.
The Scholars, a youth leadership and entrepreneurship organization dedicated to “Spreading Knowledge,” focuses on developing the next generation of leaders through public speaking, entrepreneurship, mentorship, community service, leadership development, media training, and educational opportunities. Throughout the Juneteenth celebration series, Scholars students will play active leadership roles in planning, organizing, performing, volunteering, and operating youth-owned businesses.
“The goal is bigger than events,” Rhonda Dolberry shared. “We want young people to understand history, discover their purpose, develop leadership skills, and see that they can build businesses, create opportunities, and positively impact their community right now.”
Ayden Howard has been actively involved in helping organize the Juneteenth parade efforts, while several Scholars students will showcase their entrepreneurial businesses during the festivities. Featured youth entrepreneurs include:
- Harmonie Williams, owner of Treats by Unique, is known for her delicious sweet treats
- Charis McCrary, owner of Recci’s Tea, is offering healthy energy teas
- Ally Evans, owner of Glossed by Ally, featuring branded lip glosses and body care products
These students represent just a few of the many young entrepreneurs within The Scholars organization who are learning real-world business skills while building confidence and leadership experience.
