U.S. Veteran  Barnie James Garrett (“BJ”), age 91, passed away on April 11, 2021 at his home in New Boston TX after several months of declining health, with his wife Charlene at his side.

If you asked BJ’s friends and family who he was, you would most likely hear a variety of colorful anecdotes.  A super-hero.  An undercover-agent.  A Grand Ole Opry singer.BJ was none of these, but he was many other things that made everyone love him.  An engaging storyteller.  An avid motorcyclist.  A collector of everything.  A fixer.  A free-spirit.  A man-of-all trades.  A loving husband/father/grandfather/great grandfather/cousin.

He honorably served our country in the Korean War where he was the recipient of 8 wartime medals.  Later as a veteran, he was active in the American Legion and the VFW, serving as chaplain for about 20 years, serving both Arkansas & Texas.  The highlight of his retirement years was taking 6,000+ mile motorcycle trips with his son James, still riding his Harley up to the last day of his life.

BJ was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Calvin and Lottie Schmidthart Garrett.

He is survived by:

Those we love don’t go away,

They walk besides us every day.

Unseen, unheard, but always near,

Still loved, still missed and very dear.
