Norma Simmons Cherry

February 11, 1945 – August 2, 2026

Norma Simmons Cherry went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 2, 2026. She was born on February 11, 1945, in Texarkana, Arkansas, and was a lifelong resident of the Texarkana area.

Norma will be remembered for her laugh, her encouragement, her phone calls, and knowing she was always in your corner. We are thankful for the memories she gave us, her time, her presence and her unconditional love.

She retired from United Parcel Service (UPS), where she took great pride in serving others. She was always willing to go out of her way to help those who crossed her path, leaving a lasting impression through her compassion and dedication. Norma was the “super Nana” who took the time to pick up all five of her grandchildren from school and never missed an extracurricular activity.

A faithful charter member of Hickory Street Baptist Church, Norma's unwavering faith guided her life. She loved her church family and lived as a devoted follower of Christ, serving others with grace, humility, and love, and, above all else, had a servant’s heart.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Cherry, and her parents, Opal Smith and Travis Simmons.

She is survived by her two daughters, Karen Cherry McDowell of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Susan Cherry Jewell and husband Berry of Texarkana, Texas; her two sisters: Linda Hoover of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Paula Gordon and husband Chester of Texarkana, Arkansas; her five beloved grandchildren, Taylor and husband Brandon Thompson, Ryann Brown and her special companion Quentin West, Jacob Brown and wife Staci, Cheston and wife Kylie McDowell, and Connor McDowell and his special friend Isabelle Fowler; her great-grandchildren Maddox Thompson, Eagan Thompson, and Baker Brown; and friend, Allen McDowell of Texarkana, Arkansas; and a host of cherished relatives and dear friends.

Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at home in the presence of her Lord and Savior.

Graveside service will be on Saturday, August 8, 2016, at 12 PM at Memorial Gardens with Rev. Tim Strebeck officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 7, 2016, from 6-7 PM at Texarkana Funeral Home, Arkansas.
