Seven members of the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Future Teachers Association attended the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) “The Power of You” 2017 conference in Austin in February.

Attendees were Ashley Bloodworth Douglas of Atlanta, Texas; Taylor Gulley, Brittney Moore, Misty Jade Ruth and Alexandria Simmons, all of Texarkana, Texas; and Amanda Nix and Sydney Steed, both of Wake Village, Texas.

Debbie Shidemantle, director of the Teacher Preparation Program, accompanied the students on the trip.

During the conference, the students attended sessions on different types of technologies, applications and programs and their applications in teaching lessons to elementary students.

“The students were engaged in the conference, attending sessions and participating in the programs,” Shidemantle said. “They had the opportunity to network with other professionals, sharing ideas on best practices for implementing the concepts presented during the sessions. As a group we were able to discuss the information that they heard over dinner, sharing the different ideas and processing implementation in the classroom back in Texarkana. Several of the cooperating teachers that these students are placed with have remarked about them bringing the ideas back to the classroom and trying out the ideas.”

TCEA is devoted to the use of technology in education. The organization’s primary focus is on integrating technology into the PreK-12 environment and providing members with state-of-the-art information through conferences, workshops, newsletters, the Internet, and collaborations with higher education and business.

The Future Teachers Association at A&M-Texarkana exists to provide a platform for discussion about educational topics among prospective teachers and to bring like-minded college students together in their passion for education and learning.
