Man accused of hitting another man with metal pipe outside Texarkana, Texas, convenience store
A 43-year-old man faces an aggravated assault charge after police said he hit a man with a large metal pipe late Saturday outside a convenience store on South Lake Drive in Texarkana, Texas.
Kerry Smith was also charged with resisting arrest and criminal trespass, according to the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department. He remained in the Bi-State Jail with bond set at $160,000.
Officers were dispatched to the store for a disturbance. When Officer Blake Lummus arrived, he found Smith on the ground with another man holding him down, police said. Smith fought as Lummus tried to handcuff him, and the bystander helped get him restrained.
Smith continued to resist after more officers arrived and told them, “I’m going to make y’all work for this!” according to police. It took several officers to get him into a patrol car.
Witnesses told police Smith had been walking around the parking lot when he approached a woman and offered her money for sexual favors. A man who overheard the exchange told Smith to leave, and he did.
Smith returned a few minutes later carrying a large metal pipe and struck the man with it, police said. The man tackled Smith, and a second man ran over to help hold him down until officers arrived.
Police said Smith had been banned from the property earlier that day.
The department thanked the two men who intervened. Police did not say whether the man who was struck was injured.
The release doesn’t mention injuries or Smith’s hometown, so those may be worth a quick check with Shawn Vaughn before publishing.
