Candace Susan Mizell, a lifelong resident of Texarkana, Texas, was born on August 16, 1946. She died on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joy and Ben Mizell.
She is survived by her four sisters: Cherie Mizell Holmquist, Michael Mizell Mankins (Pete), Niki Joy Mizell and Sammi Mizell Bonney (Chris). Candace was a doting aunt and will be missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Candace grew up on the Edge O’Texas Ranch where she spent many happy hours riding her favorite horse, Buttons, with her Weimaraner dog Stormy following close behind. She attended Texas High School but transferred to St. Mary’s Academy in Austin, Texas, where she graduated in May of 1964. Candace received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Fine Arts from Texas Woman’s University, and she received her Master’s Degree from Texas A & M University at Texarkana.
Candace was a professional fine artist who specialized in oil painting. She won numerous awards for her paintings in juried art shows including the Four States Fair and The State Fair of Texas. where she received a Best of Show award.
Horses and dogs were always a big part of Candace’s life. She was an owner of Chinooks and was a big supporter of the breed as a member of the Chinook Club of America. She put many titles on her Chinooks in Obedience and Rally. She was a charter member of the Kennel Club of Texarkana and worked as a volunteer in their annual AKC sanctioned dog show.
Candace was a charter member of the Texarkana Quadrille and Roundup Club. She competed in halter and reining events in AQHA quarter horse shows with her champion mare Paularine.
A memorial service to celebrate Candace’s life will be held at Texarkana Funeral Home on Texas Blvd on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 1:00 pm. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
