George Wayne Willige, born on January 7, 1942, in Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at Hospice of Texarkana, after a courageous battle with cancer. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and mentor;

George Wayne Willige, born on January 7, 1942, in Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at Hospice of Texarkana, after a courageous battle with cancer. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and mentor; George's life was a testament to passion, dedication, and love.
George was preceded in death by his parents George Howard Willige and Geraldine Willige Hardin, his grandparents Effie and Oscar Willige, half brother Mason Willige, and brother-in-law Gary Morgan and wife Linda. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Carol Morgan Willige. George's legacy is carried forward by his daughter, Kim Willige Hayes, and son-in-law, Scotty Hayes; his son, Scott Michael Willige, and daughter-in-law, Candace Willige, all residing in Texarkana, Texas. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren: Brittany Glusac (Tim), Hannah Hayes, Whitney Looper, Dalton Willige (Holly), Jacob Willige, Taylor Kugler (Alex), and Kaylea Knighton, great-grandfather to 14 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Donald Morgan and Jerry Morgan (Shera), numerous nieces and nephews, and one special family friend, Jennifer Biggar.
George's academic journey began at Longview High School, where he graduated in 1960, followed by Texarkana College in 1962, and the University of North Texas in 1965. He later earned his master's degree from East Texas State University-Commerce. His passion for education and leadership was evident throughout his 36 year career at Texarkana Independent School District, where he served as a football coach, track coach, teacher, counselor, principal, and administrator. He was a member of Williams Memorial United Methodist Church, the Wilbur Smith Rotary Club, and the Texas Association for Secondary School Principals. George was also a valued member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, where he held various leadership roles.
George was an avid reader, with a particular fondness for history and historical novels, especially those focusing on the Second World War. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with all of his grandchildren whom he adored and spoiled at every opportunity… he will always be their "Pops" or "Poppa".
His passion for his former athletes and students set him apart, as he took great pride in their accomplishments. George cherished every encounter with former students, often sharing stories and relishing in their successes, both on and off the field. His enthusiasm and genuine care for others left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 9, 5:00-7:00 pm at Chapelwood Funeral Home, 1015 N Kings Highway, Nash, Texas. Services will be held Monday, August 10, 2:00 pm at Williams Memorial United Methodist Church, 4000 Moores Lane, Texarkana, TX. Burial following at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 5101 West 7th Street, Texarkana, TX.
In honor of George's life and legacy, donations may be made to Williams Memorial United Methodist Church, St. Judes Children's Hospital, the Wilbur Smith Rotary Club in honor of George, or to a charity of one's choice.
